Hey man once again, great video! I have a question, did you need valve relief pockets on pistons when using the 086 HO head on a ld9 bottom end?
Thank you. Not normally, but they are close. With that said, the block deck and head have not been milled. Still, the factory head gasket is nearly .060" thick, so that helps.
What oil pan did you use? I tough it had to be extended in order to fit the new pump
I modify the pickup to fit within the stock pan. With that said, the inside of the pan is modified slightly, but there's no need to deepen the pan.
Man this is a great channel! I’ve been looking for a while for a good video of this process.
Have you ever installed a 2.3 high output head onto a 2.4 block? Im wondering if i should use the 2.3 ho valve springs and cam inside the 2.4 cam towers with 2.4 lifters and whether or not the smaller lifters will clear the 2.3 ho springs.
The 2.3 head will directly bolt onto the 2.4 block with 2.3 head gasket, intake manifold and exhaust manifold. You can run the small lifters with the 2.3 springs. The HO cams will fit the small lifters if you clearance the cam housing. The main issue is you can't use the 2.3 power steering system with the 2.4 housing. The easy answer is to use the 1995 2.3 cams in the 2.4 housings. They're a direct fit and a stronger profile than the stock 2.4 cams. They compliment the 2.3 head as well. After that, you'll need a tune as the 2.3 head raises compression to between 11:1 and 11.5:1 (depending on what stock pistons you have.
Copy. I was looking for the magical '95 transition cams for years but cant find them. Am building a historical "what if" gm had made the turbocharged 2.3 and/or a cobalt ss predecessor. It was nice seeing ideas ive had for years and years on some of your videos. It was easier to get an ho engine then a 95 transition engine. Tune will be no problem. Already running off a custom built engine management system. Car is running coil on plug and has sequential fuel and spark. In addition to gaining the ability to read boost pressure, the old map sensor now serves as a atmospheric pressure sensor. All of the cars original functions guages/equipment still work. It doesnt even know its lost control of the engine. As for the powersteering, i was planning on taking measurements, then destroying the 2.4 intake cam for hex drive insert then cutting, drilling and pressing the hex drive insert into the ho cam to retain power steering. Car is a 1997 sunfire gt.
How much?
Alls I needs now is a Fiero with a manual transmission and a bag full of money. Great job on the build. I'll be waiting on both those things to happen but the Quad 4 will likely be sold by then.
Ese motor se ve diferente a los comunes 2.4 Lt
You are a legend!!!! I have been searching everywhere with no luck so far. I am aving a problem with black smoke and bad acceleration, figured it might be a skipped timing on the exhaust cam.
Aww, man you didn't show the oil pan going on! I know you have another video of an LD9 getting an oil pan, so I'll have to find that. I am left with one question. How does one go about finding a decent LD9 to rebuild? I have this dream of replacing the Iron Duke on my Fiero with a Quad 4 at some point. Am I just dreaming hoping to find a 2002 with the good timing chain fixes for sale somewhere? As always, great clear video!
Thank you. They're getting harder to find. Wrecked cars are a good starting point as they had to be running in order to be wrecked. ;) Any LD9 with over 100k miles should have the timing chain replaced along with a new water pump. If it has over 150k, replace the oil pump as well. If I had to be honest, anything with over 150k should be rebuilt.
there's no need to triple or quadruple check torque. once is enough, twice is fine, but doing that often could become an issue depending on how critical the bolt stretch needs to be. though its doesnt really matter, you can clearly see the bolt turning after the correct torque has been achieved at ~6:20 or so.
All torque wrenches have a variance. Plus or minus a certain percentage. If it clicks high, there's no way to tell. If it clicks low, it will be corrected on the second torque attempt. With that said, there is also a "break away " torque, which is the amount of torque needed to overcome the static friction of the fastener before it begins to move. Even a low torque click will mostly not have enough of a variance to overcome the break away torque, so the fastener in question must have been quite a bit under specified torque. Bolt stretch is only a consideration if they're over torqued. One could click the torque wrench a thousand times and if I stop on the click, it wouldn't effect the bolts torque or stretch, since it didn't move. Another thing to consider is this motor is for sale and I have a buyer who is watching these videos, so it's good for him to see that everything is double and even triple checked for accuracy. Thank you for your comment.
@@LD9user sir, theres no need to explain torque wrenches. i know how they work and i know how theyre tested and adjusted. my point is that you hit breakaway torque AND THEN keep turning it. not every part is *that* important or anything, but some parts matter more than others. you dont need to "check" the torque, just do it right the first time.

Excelente video. Siempre te veo cuando armas la cadena tiempo del GM 2.4L
I’m so happy to see the Olds Quad4 still getting some love.
Un nuevo video!!!, que bueno que regresas hacer más videos.
When i did mine, i bought the helicoil kit and then enough exta inserts to run 2 into each hole.
That's a really good tip. Recently, I found a local industrial supply place that sells the helicoils in different lengths. Started getting the long ones.
Where buy connecting rods for quad4? GM connecting rods no longer for sale?
Ebay is a good source.
Back when I rebuilt mine there was more parts availability. (Although, one site I used stopped existing thankfully they didn't just take my money.) Even then rods were hard to find. But it would be nice if a manufacturer created a big parts list you could sort by dimensions so that you could find compatible parts easily even if it is not original.
Ah, you're working on two of them, nice.
Sounds fun. I probably should have done some performance enhancements when I rebuilt mine back in 2010.
trail braking
That's a great engine. They run pretty good when in good shape. 200HP shouldn't far off. I would get a second opinion on grinding the crank though. I have seen usable cranks become scrap from a grind job that someone got sold on.
There's a follow up video coming soon. Wait till you see that crank. Looks amazing.
@@LD9user So long as the machine shop can do it 100%, it's worth doing if perfection is desired. Many times a good low mile, well maintained engine will not need crank work other than a light polish. And many more times, a machine shop that isn't 100% competent can make one worse off than it arrived.
What is the diagram of the powersteering pump that is on these engines? Im confused if there is suppose to be a gasket behind the o-ring wedged to the inner-most-corner , I scraped out some old looking gunk( i assume its old gasket) from the inner-most-cylinder-bolt-looking thing that spins the power steering around. I tried to make sure no solution was in the powersteering spot i just got done scraping, and blew some air into that crevice. Only to realize that doing that caused my powersteering to shoot out the cap. The gunk I scraped out was semi soft, and on an image its that red center o-ring behind the main o-ring gasket.
Should be a parts diagram online.
@@LD9user when I ordered the intake cam cover gaskets, it came with an extra circular ring, Im trying to figure where that goes.
@@LD9user part 01989866 seems to be for camshaft position sensor(10456615)... so what did i scrape out of the pump kit(ac delco)? between 12578146 and 26091879 there is no other gasket... I probably messed up?
I have a haynes repair manual for my car. It says 16 LB-FT for the year my car is and later. 132 LB-IN for the previous two years. Would you still recommend sticking with the 132 LB-IN as you mentioned in the video?
Yes. 16 LB-FT is 192 LB-IN. The threads tend to pull out of the head with the higher torque applied.
Looks like Montpelier?
Marion Center Speedway
What is the manufacturer recommended oil grade for that engine?
Recommend weight is 5w30. However, we're pushing these motors well beyond what a typical street motor would encounter. Turning 5500 to 7000+ lap after lap is way too much for a typical 5w30.
What size in liters is your engine
2.4 liters
I love you’re videos on these quad 4 rebuilds! I’ve been having some serious trouble with timing chain backlash the last couple years with my race car and have had no luck fixing the problem. Can you please give me any advice to fix this? I’m at a loss
Thank you for the comment. What type of tensioner are you running? There have been a few different designs.
@@LD9user the second design like you show in the video. Under future investigation I realized I have the wrong timing chain and possibly the wrong cam sprockets. Rock auto has the correct ones for 92 grand am on the way so hopefully that fixes my problem!
I installed this kit on a 1999 Cavalier. My personal experience is good. The installation is simple and the kit seems to work. You'll no longer be able to use the ebrake, the brake adjusters are replaced by the strong spring, the big washers that go on the wheel studs before the drum weren't provided. It's better to enlarge the center of the drum in order for it to sit flush against the hub.
Lowes spring numbers: 430977 422427 One spring is inserted within the other forming a double spring.
I run a 94 Cavalier what kind of set up do you have tires etc. to hold the line? Do you stay high or do you stay low mostly?
yes, but what product is that, name, where is it sold u know
If you have the crankshaft out dont forget to put balance shaft chain on crankshaft putting back in
That's a good tip. This motor has the 2.3 oil pump swap.
Does your motor have a balance shaft
No. This motor has the balance shaft delete/oil pump swap.
I did this in the car. Kinda hard to do. Torque on can housing bolts are hard to find. I pulled the threads on one bolt. 16 ftlbs and 90 degrees is to tight
That is common. Nowadays, I simply torque the housings to 15 ft lbs.
I'm not sure how to contact you. I have some questions about the 2.4l quad 4. I was wondering if you'd be willing to help. Thanks

@@LD9user will do and do u have a Facebook or anything so maybe we can chat about motor stuff some time I race a toyota camry 2az fe motor just wanted to pick ur brain if u have any knowledge on that motor
I am using that trick the next time. I also constantly go in reverse and forward. This leaves a real even finish. Without the hose you have to be careful and to not tighten the chuck too much. I really like that trick.
I know these videos are old but...would anyone know what size of connecting rod bearing one should order for stock replacement? '99 Cavalier Z24, 2.4L dual cam, all stock. All I can find are 0.25mm, 0.50mm undersized. Would either of these work/fit?
You'd need to have the crankshaft turned undersized for the .25mm or the .50mm bearings to fit. It's usually not too expensive and you would end up with journals that are perfectly sized.
@LD9user 😢 Car still runs, but haven't driven it since. My only mode of transpo. Lost job as result (live in farm country). Spent every last available $ addressing timing system and top end. As "cheap" as it may be, it's still beyond my means, leaving me still stranded.
Love your series. Doing some engine work on my '99 Chevy Cavalier Z24. Recently sub'd. Couple questions for you if you can 😉 The non original (one piece) tensioner and guide...do you have a part #/is it just the one for prev generation ld9's? I have a rattle from right side engine, hence I'm doing timing job. Is there a chance my LD9 has suffered lifter collapse as well? The engine never went out of time.
I was told going forward and reverse with the drill sits the valves better.
Thank you for the comment. I've done it both ways and obtained equal results. You could go forward and reverse...I feel it's a personal preference.
@@LD9user Ok. Just wanted to get your take on it.
Couldn't the spark plug hole leak because the gasket does not seal properly?
That's possible, but that was checked.
Bastante trabajo por hacer.
Sí. Gran parte del trabajo se centra en darme la mejor oportunidad de terminar la carrera. La mayoría de los enduros son de 100 vueltas.
I'm about to use this oil in my truck 10w30 full Synthetic high zinc
A tu consideracion, cuál motor es mejor , el 2.4 de origen oldsmobile, o el 2.2 de eco-tec?
GTX is not a racing oil. And of course the bearings are from different companies. That could make a big difference.
That is true. However, both bearing manufacturers are premier quality products within the industry, which leaves the oil as the main variable. I believe Castrol would work really well for a hot street car that might run a drag race on the weekends, and do so at a reasonable cost. Circle track racing is quite a different environment, however. The motors really take a beating.
You need to try running Amsoil
Thank you for the comment. My understanding is Amsoil makes some amazing products. Can't really complain about the performance if the GP-1 oil though. With that said, oil companies are sometimes bought out (like what happened to Brad Penn) and formulations get changed. If that happens, I'd put Amsoil at the top of my go-to list.
Where’s the enduro?
They're held at multiple locations by me. We're going to find someplace in the spring. The onboard Gopro should be a gas.
Hello hoping you see this comment and can lend some advice!! My quad 4 motor has the other style of tensioner where the tensioner and shoe are separate, and I broke the little piece of plastic that holds in the extra spring that yours doesn’t seem to use. Would you happen to have one for sale, or is it even that important can I run it without the spring? It seems like the tensioner and shoe are doing their job and the little spring isn’t helping too much anyway!
I may have something here. Please email me a picture at mpclass3@yahoo.com.
Looking good!
Thank you! There's still a lot of work to do to make it reliable for an enduro, but I'm feeling good about everything so far.
